Initially, this was just an up-to-date, page-at-a-glance, list of Galway City churches, their websites and social media links for my own use.
Then a friend was an hour late for Mass. The times had changed, he'd tried to look it up online, but didn't find up-do-date information. Another was confused that Athenry isn't on the Galway diocese website (Answer: it's a church in east Galway, but Not Of This Diocese, Probably For Important Historical Reasons!)
I thought about how many websites, Facebook pages etc need to be checked to get a view of what's going on in the wider church. Any my sense that as the clergy age, we will see a lot more organisation changes in churches in the aread.
And I realised that other people might find the lists useful. And how easy it would be to add a news feed. So I got busy one weekend.
It's still a work-in-progress. I'm an ordinary lay person with a full time job, and a few other hobbies. But it's growing.
Future plans
Things I'm thinking about (very roughly in order):
- North and west Galway lists (South is almost ready)
- Making the home page a list of recent news, not a feed of everything
- Lists and news from non-Catholic churches
- Revisit the Privacy Policy , because the site does share private information from "otherwise published" notices.
- Improve the Editorial Policy
- Inviting the news items to come to me - especially updates to the church location and social media profile lists
- In-depth photo features about individual churches in Galway city
- Money: I've happily paid for the website costs so far, and donated my time. But it will need to at least cover costs sometime in the future
- The future: what should happen if (when!) I can't manage the site anymore.
